DRV8832 VREF vs VCC Voltage

Hi team,

I am working on opportunity using the DRV8832 motor driver for solenoid control.

In pg 8 of the data sheet, VREF is used to set the motor voltage.

The question is if I want to set VREF to say 3V and VCC is previously at 5V, does VCC need to be reduced to 3V as well? From the diagrams it appears that VCC gets PWMed across the motor so the peak voltage across the motor is VCC. How does VREF then control the motor voltage?

I am also a little confused on under what circumstances that part will enter PWM mode? Form my understanding of the datasheet, IN1/IN2 can be PWM from an external source or the part self generates a PWM signal.
